The term "Federal" refers to the time following the Revolutionary War when the country was not only defining its government but also its way of life. The decorative arts at this time moved away from the ornate looks of the past and embraced Neoclassicism which is characterized in this American Federal 1790 mahogany bow front chest. Notice the symmetry, graceful straight lines, tapered bracket legs, string inlay and contrasting veneers.
