Designer Francois Carre - The use of "curved strips of sheet steel" to form seats for garden chairs was considered innovative design and construction in the 1860s, but was still in demand into the twentieth century. Patented in 1866 by Francois Carre, the varied versions of bent steel rod and spring construction furniture was produced not only in Paris but also in Vienna and New York. This pair is from the late 1920s.
