The use of the hitching post has been recorded as early as 1625 in England, with some posts serving as village distance markers as well. Hitching posts have become increasingly scarce, because during World War II, scrap drives resulted in many hitching posts being broken up with sledge hammers for the war effort. A testament to its age, this post is solid!
